Beyond managing Alzheimer’s disease people, anti-tau immunotherapies may reveal other mental illnesses.
“Alzheimer’s may give all of us a windows into what the results are inside mind that makes folks psychotic,” Dr. Koppel mentioned. “Once you have a biologic treatment plan for psychosis that becomes at an underlying pathophysiology, trust in me, you could potentially evaluate schizophrenia in newer ways. Perhaps it will not be tau, it may be a paradigm for the treatment of mental illness.”
The continuing future of Alzheimer’s treatment options
Dr. Marambaud said the lasting goal of anti-tau immunotherapies is to protect against Alzheimer’s disease. But that is presently impossible because experts lack the biomarkers and symptomatic methods needed to discover the illness before intellectual symptoms seem.
